Preview

The San Diego Padres head to Truist Park on Thursday, July 23, for a mid-summer road matchup against the Atlanta Braves, with first pitch set for 12:15 PM ET. Griffin Canning takes the ball for San Diego against Atlanta veteran Chris Sale. With the dog days of July in full swing and every game carrying playoff-race weight, this is the kind of road test that reveals what a roster is genuinely made of. The Padres bring a recognizable lineup anchored by Fernando Tatis Jr., Manny Machado, and Xander Bogaerts — a group capable of doing damage against anyone.

Padres at Braves: Pitching Matchup on Thursday, July 23

Griffin Canning gets the start for San Diego. The right-hander has worked to establish himself as a reliable rotation piece, and a road start against Atlanta's lineup — which features Matt Olson at the heart of the order — is a legitimate measuring stick. How Canning handles Olson and Michael Harris II will go a long way toward determining San Diego's fortunes on Thursday.

On the other side, Chris Sale is a left-hander with a long track record of missing bats. Sale's ability to generate swing-and-miss pitches makes him a tough assignment for any lineup. The Padres will need to be disciplined early, work counts, and avoid expanding the zone against a pitcher who can make hitters look foolish when they chase.

Keys to Watch for San Diego

Tatis at the Top

Fernando Tatis Jr. leads off for the Padres, and his ability to get on base and set the tone early against Sale is critical. If Tatis can work Sale into deep counts in the first two innings, it changes the entire complexion of San Diego's offensive approach for the afternoon.

Canning Against Atlanta's Middle of the Order

Olson and Harris II represent the heart of Atlanta's lineup and the primary threat to Canning's day. Keeping Olson in the ballpark and limiting Harris II's ability to do damage with runners on base are the two boxes Canning needs to check.

Machado and Bogaerts vs. a Left-Hander

Manny Machado batting third and Xander Bogaerts fifth gives San Diego real production potential against Sale. Both are right-handed hitters who have historically performed well against left-handed pitching. If the Padres are going to solve Sale, it likely runs through those two bats.

Depth of the Order

Gavin Sheets at DH and Freddy Fermin behind the plate round out the bottom half of the lineup alongside Jase Bowen and Jake Cronenworth. Atlanta's pitching staff will be less concerned with that group, which means San Diego needs Tatis, Machado, and Bogaerts to carry the offensive load.

Prediction

This is a tough draw. Sale is a difficult left-hander to solve, and Truist Park is not an easy place to win. That said, the Padres have the lineup construction — right-handed hitters up and down the order — to give Sale problems. The game likely comes down to how long Canning can keep Atlanta's lineup at bay and whether the San Diego bullpen can protect a lead if one materializes. Expect a low-scoring, competitive game. Padres 3, Braves 2.
